While many students are returning to classes in September the Hofstra Women’s Lacrosse team is putting the finishing touches their annual fundraiser to support HEADstrong Foundation and the fight against blood cancer. Annually the team hosts the Nicholas Colleluori Women’s Lacrosse Classic, which is a special event held at James M. Shuart Stadium at Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY. The event is a tribute to HEADstrong founder and Hofstra alum, Nicholas Colleluori, who inspired the program to get involved and make a difference.
Event organizers adopted the same fundraising model used for HEADstrong Foundation’s Men’s Fall Classic to create a round-robin style fall scrimmage with the purpose of raising funds and awareness for the disease. The event is the first of its kind within the game of women’s lacrosse.
“We are very honored to host the Nick Colleluori Women’s Lacrosse Classic,” commented Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach Abby Morgan. “Nick meant a lot to so many people and we hope that the $100,000 plus we helped raise during the events will assist in the fight against this dreaded disease.”
Over 15 collegiate programs from across the country participate in the event and it is attended by hundreds of families and enthusiasts from the region. The event has successfully generated over $105,000 for the HEADstrong Foundation since its inception.
NCAA student athletes are at the heart of this philanthropic effort. Each participating program generates funds through soliciting donations and official HEADstrong merchandise on their respected campuses. The event boasts a fall festival like atmosphere with all proceeds benefitting the fight against blood cancer.
The HEADstrong Foundation is grateful of this event and thanks the Women’s Lacrosse Coaching Staff for hosting this event.
