HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE

On Tuesday, September 27, 2011, the HEADstrong Foundation launched their newest initiative with the opening of Nick’s House.  The two-story commercial property is a milestone for the foundation.  Not only does it serve as the official HEADquarters for the foundation but boasts complimentary living accommodations for families with loved ones being treated in the area.  The opening of Nick’s House furthers the organizations mission by lessening the financial burden put on families battling cancer and by providing them with the comforts of a home, including computer access and laundry facilities.  Nick’s House was established through the generosity and vision of the family and friends of Nick Colleluori.

The two-story commercial property was abandoned for three years and under major disrepair before it was acquired by the organization in April of 2011.  Recognized for its potential and locality, the Colleluori family began the rehabilitation process on the building with the assistance from several manufactures and loyal supporters.  The inspiration for Nick’s House came from the Colleluori’s personal experiences.  The family spent many nights sleeping in chairs and on the floor at the hospital while Nick underwent procedures in his bed.  During a stay at the hospital, they met a family who was sleeping in their car due to lack of finances while their loved one received treatment inside.  While Nicholas underwent an experimental treatment at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, the Colleluori’s lodged at a family housing facility.

For patients, Nick’s House is a haven of comfort with accommodations for two families, complete with private bedrooms, a common kitchen, living and dining room.  The facility is located in the suburbs of Philadelphia and is a blueprint for HEADstrong Foundation who has a goal of providing resources through building a Nick’s House in other metropolitan areas.  Nick’s House is conveniently situated near SEPTA Regional Rail lines and other public transportation, and is a 15-minute drive from Center City Philadelphia.

“I can say that Nick’s House gives us hope for a new day, everyday, and a greater appreciation for the days we are given.  One day at a time is something that is very real to us now.  The HEADstrong Foundation has become extended family. ” – Dave and Sue Remington, Guests of Nick’s House
